The CSB-SCB podcast is owned and operated by the Canadian Society for Biomechanics. Student Representatives, Jackie Zehr and Franziska Onasch, interview experts (academics, industry professionals, practitioners) about the science and practice of biomechanics. Interdisciplinary topics are discussed with a particular focus on research, technology, evidence-based practice, and knowledge translation in the field of biomechanics. New episodes are released on the first Monday of each month. For questions and inquiries, email students@csb-scb.com. Guest Biography:
Dr. Heidi Ploeg is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Queen’s University. Within the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, she is the inaugural Chair for Women in Engineering, a new initiative with the goal of increasing the number of women who become practicing engineers and scholars. Dr. Ploeg has earned a BSc (1988), MSc (1991), and PhD (2000) in Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University. An overarching objective of her Bone and Joint Biomechanics Laboratory is to understand how mechanical loading parameters can change the material properties of live bone samples and to integrate this complex experimental work into finite element models. She has also conducted extensive work in the area of orthopaedic implant design and the mechanical testing of biomaterials such as bone cement. Dr. Ploeg has experienced many interesting career transitions, including an Engineering Scientist role at an orthopaedic implant company (Switzerland) to an approximately 15-year Faculty appointment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), to her current Faculty appointment at Queen’s University (Canada).
